Many years ago there lived in New Hampshire a poor farmer, whose name was Ebenezer Webster. His little farm was among the hills, not far from the Merrimac River. It was a beautiful place to live in; but the ground was poor, and there were so many rocks that you would wonder how anything could grow among them.
Ebenezer Webster was known far and wide as a brave, wise man. When any of his neighbors were in trouble or in doubt about anything, they always said, "We will ask Captain Webster about it." They called him Captain because he had fought the French and Indians and had been a brave soldier in the Revolutionary War. Indeed, he was one of the first men in New Hampshire to take up arms for his country.
The Revolutionary War lasted several years; and during all that time, Captain Webster was known as one of the bravest of the American patriots.
He had never attended school; but he had tried, as well as he could, to educate himself. It was on account of his honesty and good judgment that he was looked up to as the leading man in the neighborhood. He had gotten a little knowledge of the law. And at last, because of this as well as because of his sound common sense, he was appointed judge of the court in his county.
It had been very hard for him to make a living for his large family on the stony farm among the hills. But now his office as judge would bring him three hundred or four hundred dollars a year. He had never had so much money in his life. And he would use it to educate his children.
18. What does the text mainly tell about?

- Ebenezer Webster’s parts of his life.

- Ebenezer Webster’s joining an army.
- Ebenezer Webster’s wise neighbors.

What does the
underlined phrase mean?

The greenhouse
effect is a warning of the air around us. It gets its name from the greenhouses
that people use to grow plants. These greenhouses let in heat from sunlight and
trap it inside. Earth’s atmosphere –the layer of air that surround our
planet-also traps heat.
Greenhouse
effect raises temperature at a planet’s surface. It is the result of
heat energy being trapped by gases in the atmosphere. Certain gases
cause the atmosphere to act like the glasses in greenhouse. As a result, the
temperature of a planet’s surface may be higher than it otherwise would be-on
Earth about 330 C (590F) higher. The main gases that
produce the greenhouse effect on Earth are water vapour and carbon dioxide.
Scientist suspect that increased discharge of carbon dioxide from human

warming.

Infotainment Programs:
Pro and Contra
Do
you like gossip? Do you like news which reveals the life of famous celebrities?
lf you do, then you must enjoy watching infotainment programs on TV today. Many
people condemn the content of the infotainment programs. However, the TV
ratings show that an infotainment program with different names from almost TV channels in Indonesia is one
of the 'most watched' TV programs.
People
who are fond of infotainment programs believe that the contents of infotainment
program are based on the fact and can encourage celebrities to do good and
positive things in public. They also believe that journalists of these programs
always try to find the truth behind the gossip. Moreover, celebrities need such
programs to promote their profile and career. These programs give a room for
mutual needs: reporters and celebrities. Reporters need the story, while
celebrities need fame for life.
Nevertheless,
there are also some people who strongly object to the good point of
infotainment programs. They say that infotainment programs are merely about
slandering another person. Sometimes, the program goes too far into the private
lives of people. Celebrities think this is very annoying. For example, gossips
about a divorce or about someone cheating on his/her spouse often become the
headlines. The worst thing is, sometimes, the stories are reported without
firstly seeking the information or confirmation from the celebrities involved
in the stories.
So
far; infotainment programs have become a dilemma for some viewers. On one hand,
these programs can run stories on how celebrities build their career and how
they feel about being famous, but on the other hand, these programs also bring
terrible consequences, especially for celebrities whose private lives are
scrutinized. Sometimes they feel they do not have a normal life by losing their
‘free life’.
40. The text above mainly discusses about . . . .
- The reasons of airing infotainment programs
- The positive sides of infotainment programs
- The negative effects of infotainment programs
- The controversy of infotainment programs
- The reasons of rejecting the infotainment
programs
41. According to text, which statement is true?
- It is not important to search information from
the person involved in the story.
- All people agree with the infotainment program
because it is very entertaining.
- The positive side of the infotainment program is
it runs news of people's private lives.
D.
Even though many
viewers dislike the content of the infotainment program, it still has high
rating.
E.
There is no good point
in the infotainment program, so it is better to ban the program.
42. “People who are fond
of infotainment programs believe that the contents of infotainment program
are……”
What
does the underlined word mean?

One day, a young farm boy named Eragon finds a blue stone while

part of a legacy of secret heroes called Riders.
With the help of Brown, a wise man,
